There are many people today calling themselves coaches.
Are they coaching?
How can you know what coaching really is and what it is not?
I come across many people who think they have been coached, but when they tell me what they got, it’s clearly not coaching. Coaching is not counselling, or mentoring, or therapy.
Many of you know this.
Here’s a quick guide to recognise real coaching (as opposed to fake coaching given by those that say they are coaching but aren’t)
What you will get from real, authentic, transformational coaching
You will get to choose the topic that is discussed
You will feel listened to at a deep level
You will feel like you had time and space to fully get everything out
You will end in a totally different place to where you started – you’ll experience a shift
You will feel empowered
You will find solutions from within you which you didn’t know were there
You will feel energised
You will see totally different perspectives
You will understand yourself on a deeper level
You will have connected to what’s deep in your heart
You will wonder how you didn’t see all that before
You will do most of the talking – at least 70%-80%
What is not coaching – ‘fake coaching’
You will feel led by their agenda
You will receive advice
You will learn directly from their experience or expertise which they will share with you
You may feel like the person isn’t listening enough
You may feel like the person didn’t really get to know you or your agenda
You will feel they are keen to fix you and get to a solution
You may feel like you didn’t have a chance to get everything out
You will speak less than 70%-80% of the time
You may be mulling over all that you have been told
