I’ve just got off a call with a client who is building up the courage to break free from her corporate job and set up her own business. I understand this journey deeply, and feel great empathy, as it’s something I did many years ago.
Those of you who have also done this will know the mix of fears, adrenaline, and excitement that comes with it.
I also think about friends in my circle who have, at some point, talked about—maybe even taken a few steps toward—setting up their own business, but never had the courage to do it.
Taking risks and finding the courage to step out—whether starting your own business or making any big change—brings up fears, phobias, and, dare I say it, excuses.
Whether you’re longing to find a spouse but feel afraid to step into dating, considering marriage but nervous about commitment, dreaming about moving into another job that isn’t as safe, secure or familiar as the one you’re in, or desiring a promotion that feels too scary—these steps all require taking a risk and finding the courage to do so.
When culture holds us back
Unfortunately, in whatever culture you live, there will always be convenient excuses or “logic” that talks you out of taking risk. It may come from naysayers in your family or friends circle, or church culture that over-spiritualizes risky steps—teaching that you must hear directly from God or that He would never ask you to do something risky, dangerous, or without guaranteed outcomes.
Of course, God does not expect us to take unnecessary risks for the sake of risk. But every journey of faith requires stretching, being uncomfortable, and allowing ourselves to be challenged in order to grow. God is good at requiring this of us. He also usually guides us and speaks to us on the journey itself, not just at the beginning.
What does breaking free look like?
“Breaking free” can mean many things in these contexts. It is the process of removing obstacles in our minds that stop us from stepping into the incredible plans God has for us. God’s plans are not about choosing the safe path or only moving forward when every detail is guaranteed.
Breaking free means living free—free to follow a path we know is our purpose. It means overcoming fears and limiting beliefs so we can create a vision for living out our purpose as children of God.
The shift
We would not expect the son or daughter of a billionaire to think small about what their life can count for. We would not expect royalty to limit their vision because of resources or influence they think they could never have.
Our Dad is richer than a billionaire or even a trillionaire. He is beyond all earthly wealth. The Bible also tells us we are royalty:
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…” (1 Peter 2:9, NIV).
So, our thinking needs to change.
Imagine living so free that you could envision changing the world in an incredible way during your lifetime, leaving a legacy that would last long after you are gone.
Imagine believing this vision is something God Himself backs you in.
Imagine stepping out fearlessly, with courage, and discovering the favor God has planted for you along the way—favor that provides everything you need.
Imagine not being afraid to approach those who can help.
Imagine not being afraid of “failure.”
Imagine your vision unfolding step by step as you walk forward.
Imagine rejection sliding off you like water off a duck’s back. You’re not afraid of people’s opinions. You’re not seeking recognition. You’re simply fearless, knowing God has already given you what you need—skills, resources, mindset, connections, ideas, creativity—and will continue to provide along the way.
This is your destiny
My friend, this is how you were created to live. You don’t have to wait until heaven; you can begin to live this way now on earth.
You can see people who already lived this way. Think of Charlie Kirk, who lived like this until he was recently assassinated. Think of Martin Luther King Jr., who carried a bold vision until his assassination. Okay bad examples, as both men were assassinated. But there are countless more examples, for example, think of world-renowned entrepreneurs who built against all odds, overcoming fear. They put everything on the line, overcoming their fear of failure.
Best of all—think about yourself. You have already done this many times in your life. You’ve overcome fear and stepped forward anyway.
Pause for a moment. When did you do this?
That was your very own, personal flavor of courage in action. You used strategies that got you over the line. You are already an expert in breaking free. You already carry strategies for breaking free.
Now imagine what if you applied this same strategy to big areas of your life? The places where you most want to break free. The goals and dreams you most want. You already have the strategy.
You already know how to move forward.
The call
So let me ask you:
How do you want to break free in your life?
What would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?
What would you do if money and resources were not limited?
What’s stopping you from starting now?
